Halloween Costumes
Culture has always been a huge part of our world, but few
really study cultures other than their own. Without specialized classes or
reading about other cultures, the only way to really dive into another culture
would be to visit there. The Oceanic or Pacific Island culture is an
interesting, but comparatively small culture. Before the film Moana was
released, Pacific Island culture was rarely represented in film. Disney went to
high extents to ensure these people were accurately portrayed in the film. According
to an article by Carla Herreria in the Huffington Post, Disney even “assembled
a team of experts in Polynesian and Oceanic culture and arts known as the
Oceanic Story Trust to consult with filmmakers and ensure that the film, though
fictional, is as authentic as possible.”
Obviously Disney is taking the appropriate steps to preserve this proud
culture. The issue lies in the costume they released to allow someone to dress
up as a character from the film named Maui. In today’s day and age, the world
is full of people who just want something to complain about. Instead of taking
pride that their culture is gaining popularity and respect, the Oceanic people
are complaining about “people will be able to put on the brown skin and be
somebody brown without understanding the experience of someone who is brown.”
Let me remind you, these are children’s costumes. So instead of promoting their
culture, they would like to teach children that wearing costumes is racist.
Kids are not going to wear these costumes if they did not see the movie. The
only reason they want to wear the costumes is because they saw the movie,
enjoyed it, and want to be the character they enjoyed. The Moana movie had a
role of introducing the world to the Oceanic culture, and Disney ensured that
it would be positively and accurately portrayed. The costume served as further
promotion, but was shot down by the culture. Ten years ago, people dressed up
as Native Americans and some still do today. Removing the costume only further
proves that people only want something to complain about and the world is full
of a bunch of selfish pansies who want some sort of compensation for their
emotional trauma. Next thing we know NFL players are going to be suing everyone
who has a jersey and doesn’t play football. Cowboys are going to be on twitter
posting about all the kids they see wearing boots and cowboy hats who don’t live
on a farm. Cats are going to claw every skimpy 20-year-old girl who thought
dressing like a slutty cat would attract a nice young man who doesn’t want to
take advantage of her. Speaking of that, sexualizing innocent images such as
Winnie the Pooh or Tinkerbell is the choice of the girl wearing them. If they
want to wear them, be my guest. Hell, send me a picture. They know what they
are doing and know exactly what will happen when they put them on. Apparently
as long as it isn’t a Maui costume, wear whatever you want.
